developing story northeast of los angeles. the red cross setting up an evacuation center as the massive wildfire marches out of control. spreading across the angeles national forest. more than 4,000 acres have now been burned. and abc's david wright is there on the front lines to show us just how dangerous this fire is becoming. good morning to you, david. >> reporter: good morning, josh. we're at a staging area for some of the 500 firefighters that are battling this blaze. tough going for them. over the past few heres, we have watched as the flames have kroempt thcrept over that hillside. labor day weekend up in smoke in the san gabriel valley. campers, hikers, and holiday picnickers all had to evacuate. >> we saw the smoke next to us. and we started packing. >> reporter: 12,000 visitors normally come here for the holiday weekend. three hikers were stranded behind the fire lines. the fire department launched a rescue helicopter and found them, hoisting all three to safety in two hours. the steep terrain makes the fire spread quickly. about 4,000 acres consumed so far. and it's

go to josh and the rest of the headlines. >> okay, george. we're going to begin in los angeles right now, for a gunman that claimed to kidnap a bank manager and tied a bomb around her waist during a daring robbery. you see aerial shots of it right now. at this hour, new questions are surfacing. one of them, was the manager actually involved in the plot all along? here's abc's nick watt. >> reporter: the bank manager, allegedly ordered to rob her own bank. police say her nightmare began around 8:00 wednesday morning when the two men approached her outside her home as he was leaving for work. she told police the men ordered her to drive the device to her stomach and drive to the bank. >> she was told it was a bomb. >> reporter: fearing for her life, she did exactly as she was told. open the vault and throw bags of cash outside the back door. the robs made their escape before cops and the bomb squad arrived on the scene. >> they very carefully removed that device from her body. >> reporter: a bomb squad robot detonated the device, which turned out to be a very convincing fake, leaving s
